Bitcoin Day 16, Meetups and ATM's

Wednesday. Saw a real life Bitcoin ATM tonight!

For those not following, this is a crazy experiment explained in this post.

So tonight was the night of the monthly Wellington Bitcoin Meetup. An ATM was meant to be making an appearance!

I turned up and got a drink from a mate of mine, as Macs Brew bar still does not accept bitcoin. A few people are chasing them up though!

After a few bitcoiners came along, there was a bit of a discussion of what I was doing, and I thanked a few of them for purchasing me phone topups etc, and got more offers (fruit/vege, mead, beer, etc etc).

The ATM arrived! Pics will come in the summary of the week, but man it was cool. I helped carry it in, and it was one of those Lamassu ATM's.

The general gist was that you scan your public wallet key, and then put in NZD cash, and then you send the coins, and voila! A few people tried it (including some not in the meetup!). I didn't have any money, so couldn't, but someone lent me $5 to try it with, and I gave them the BTC I got sent.

One problem with the ATM, is you can't get NZD cash from it, only BTC (ie only one way ATM).

I got fed and watered by some fellow bitcoiners, who paid NZD and I paid them in BTC. Got a few more followers of the blog.

If you can offer assitance, just do it! I'm on twitter as haquaman, on reddit as haquaman, on IRC as aquaman (no h), and email at hugh AT davenport DOT net DOT nz.
