Bitcoin Day 4

For those not following, this is a crazy experiment explained in this post.

So the day started off with the price around $500 for 1 BTC, down $10 from yesterday :( Still holding reasonably stable though.

So yesterday I got some flack for having a "dodgy" SSL certificate for this blog, so I bought one from namecheap, who accepts bitcoin, for around $10 in bitcoin. Blog should now work with http and https fine.

Decided not to use existing food today, so didn't have breakfast, and didn't pack a lunch. Going to be a full bitcoin day now!

I got various offers to get food delivered to me for bitcoin, and I got my NZ sim card topped up with bitcoin ($20 worth). I haven't got my AU sim card topped up, and I'm flying out sunday morning!

I also got an offer for $150 worth of petrol vouchers posted down from auckland, so I could be driving by the months out!

So far, all my purchases have been through friendly people off the internet, and not through actual vendors. I was hoping that would change today, and was planning on having lunch at Rogue and Vagabond, and dinner at Mama Browns.

So off to lunch. I caught up with the owner of Rogue, and talked a bit about bitcoin with him. He liked the crazy thing I was doing, but thought it sounded like too much extra effort to actually accept. We came to a middle ground, which I bent some rules to accept with myself. I now have a tab with them that I pay in NZD next month. I left a $30 tip in the form of a bitcoin private wallet on a slip of paper with this blog, and left it in the tip jar ;).

So far this is the closest to having a vendor accept, which if none else do, I think this is still a win!

After lunch, I went and left tips of $5 in bitcoin at Fidels and Midnight Expresso (the lines were too long, and I have a day job, so couldn't wait!). Will see if they redeem them.

At the end of the day, I had tequila! It was bought by the company, but I had a lime to go with it! The same lime I brought yesterday (I should really add photos at some stage!). Tasty tequila!

After work, our team went to Mama Browns, and I jumped in and had a chat with the guy I talked to yesterday. He said he hadn't heard back from the manager. sadface, I might have to pay for this one in NZD... One of my workmates offered to pay for me in exchange for bitcoin, so all is not lost (just another rule bent!). Turns out I didn't need this, as the boss paid instead! Nice of him :D. I left a tip anyway.

After dinner, went to Meow, left a tip, went to LBQ, left a tip. All in bitcoin. I've got record of all the public addresses the tip is in, so I could see if they get used :D.

So after today, I have had a pizza or two, a burger at Rogue (paid for next month), left some tips, and got various offers of dinner and sending groceries and petrol vouchers from randoms off the internet. I'm kinda happy about this. I fly off on Sunday morning to Sydney, will see how it is there. Hopefully someone can buy me a top up card :D.

If you can offer assitance, just do it! I'm on twitter as haquaman, on reddit as haquaman, on IRC as aquaman (no h), and email at hugh AT davenport DOT net DOT nz.
